We began broadcasting on 3rd April 1992 using pioneering technology that was featured on TV programme "Tomorrow's World."

We have two transmitters - our Carn Brea aerial covers the west from mid-Cornwall down to Lands End, and the Caradon Hill mast for the eastern area, covering the rest of Cornwall, Plymouth and West Devon. This means we are able to split our news, traffic & travel, what's ons, and commercials to make us more local and relevant to our audience.

We are a music led radio station playing the classic hits of the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, as well as current hits.

Our target audience is 25-54 year olds (although we are very happy for you to listen if you are younger or older).

In 2003 and 2006 we won the prestigious gold Sony award for Station of the Year - the judges said:

"So much energy in one place. A radio station totally at home in its area. Skillful at getting out and about and providing a great sounding board for its audience to interact with."

Throughout the year, Pirate FM is involved in more than fifty outside events including the Royal Cornwall Show, Newlyn Fish festival, numerous carnivals, firework displays and Christmas light switch-ons.

On top of that, we take our sport seriously. For the past 6 years, we have covered every Plymouth Argyle match "supporting Plymouth Argyle every step of the way" and followed the team's rise from 3rd division to its current position in the Coca Cola Championship. We also follow local rugby, primarily Cornish Pirates, Launceston & Redruth.
